Post One: Political Coverage Trustworthy?

Post 1: I recently read an article regarding Cyrus Nowrasteh, the writer of the film, “Pathway to 9/11,” and a conflict that he is currently facing. For those reading this blog that do not know what, “Pathway to 9/11,” is, it is a film that depicts all the chances that Bill Clinton had to order the killing of Bin Laden in the 90’s. The film sparked a lot of controversy and Cyrus was attacked by the left winged media for attacking Bill Clinton’s, “reputation,” and for exposing the truth behind the Clinton Administrations chances to rid the world of Bin Laden. Anyways, since the films release, Cyrus has tried to get the film on DVD and for many months ABC, the station from where the film was broadcasted, told him that there would be a DVD. But, recently, I read an article by Cyrus Nowrasteh in which he states that an ABC executive told him the following regarding the reasons why they would not release the film, “’If Hillary weren’t running for president, this wouldn’t be a problem’” (Wall Street Journal. “A real 9/11 Cover-Up.” By Cyrus Nowrasteh. September 11, 2007). When I read this quote by an ABC executive, I was outraged. ABC, the same company that owns Disney and is one of the few industries that are able to influence the general public through the media that they release, was making decisions based on how the Democrats in America were represented. Now, to my main point. If ABC, the same company and news channel that influences millions of Americans that watch their news, daily, is willing to not allow the production of a DVD, for political reasons, then just imagine the corruption and abuse that might be represented through their news station. The political and government related news shown everyday on ABC, for all the public knows, is just as skewed and bias as the comments that the executive of ABC made. If the executive is willing to sway the public in this coming election by not producing a DVD, than imagine the washed down and manipulative news that the public is receiving regarding the upcoming election. It is wrong and simply manipulative for companies like ABC to take the power that they know they have and use it to sway the public’s opinion in one direction. The news is supposed to be a representative of both sides of all situations and is supposed to be unbiased. But, clearly this is untrue and it is still upsetting to me that there are individuals out there that do not even understand that they are being manipulated into taking one political side over another.

To start, i just want to say it's truly a relief to see people like you that are 17-18 interested in these issues and passionate about them. I'll respectfully counter your several statements by providing some interesting facts and asking a question.

Your blog seems to hint that the Clinton administration didn't want to get Bin Laden or that it was in someway Bill Clinton's fault that he's still alive. To be completely fair, i will agree with you, Bill Clinton did not want to "kill" Bin Laden at first, it was in his interest to capture him. But, that isn't to ignore the fact that conservative media and republican politicians were calling Clinton "obsessed with Bin Laden," "obsessed with one man." Still, Clinton stood the course or w/e bush likes to say and in 1999 he went before the UN and Pres. Clinton convinced the United Nations to impose sanctions against Afghanistan to force the Taliban to extradite Osama. Clinton was keeping an eye on his operations, 9/11 didn't happen on Clinton's watch, it happened on Bush's. Let's remember the Osama Bin Laden that Bill Clinton let "escape from the Sudan" was not the MASS MURDERER yet, that George Bush's military let escape from Tora Bora. You haven't specifically made any kind of statement to whether or not Bush has done a better job, but many would argue that in fact he has done worse.

"According to the Washington Post, the U.S. government concluded that Osama bin Laden was present during the Battle of Tora Bora, Afghanistan in late 2001, and according to civilian and military officials with first-hand knowledge, failure by the U.S. to commit U.S. ground troops to hunt him led to his escape and was the gravest failure by the U.S. in the war against al Qaeda!!!!!!!!!!!!! Intelligence officials have assembled what they believe to be decisive evidence, from contemporary and subsequent interrogations and intercepted communications, that bin Laden began the battle of Tora Bora inside the cave complex along Afghanistan's mountainous eastern border." Let's not forget that this information WAS KNOWN BY PRES. GWBUSH at the time.
I'll go to sleep on this note, "The Washington Post also reported that the CIA unit dedicated to capturing Osama was shut down in late 2005." That's really scary.

Austin, from talking to you at school on a fairly consistent basis, I know that you are an avid FOX news watcher. Having said that, you have lost the right to complain about any other sort of media outlet being bias or unfair. It is common knowledge, Austin, that FOX news is the most rightwing and conservative news station there is. I also know that you watch shows such as "Hannity and Colmes" and "The O'Reilly Factor" on a regular basis.
You say in your blog that you are upset that people let themselves be manipulated by news outlets, but what about all of the people watching Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity. Are they receiving the truth???
I think that if you are going to criticize networks like ABC for having interests in certain parties, than you should first evaluate networks that you and so many others have come to trust, like FOX.

Im sorry to say, but there is no piece of media that is truly unbaised, the editors political beliefs or ideas will always come out in their reports, there is no stopping it. It is also sad that many accept what they say to be truth, and will then believe exactly what they are told without examining the other side. The only way to truly make your own true opinion is to examine each side and then decide for oneself.

Hey general!!!

So basically i read your article and read everyones comments. So first i will like to state that if any left wing supporters say that the film is way to bias or anything talk to the people who support Michael Moore. However, to nick's comment even with those "sanctions" against Afghanistan how many of them were kept up by the UN. The UN has lost all power throughout the World imposing sanction which they cannot keep. To Andrew even when Austin watches right wing media who is to say that whatever you are watching is right. The left wing owns almost all forms of national stations and I sadly have to agree with Aaron that unfortunately will live in an age that we cannot depart from our own ideas to write a blance and fair article.

Austin, I too wrote about the political party biases in today's world and I agree that our media should work towards presenting less politically one-sided views. Sadly, in today's world I believe that the stations are more concerned about attracting more people with their politically charged views rather than presenting the facts. So, in order to truly participate in our nation's politics the burden falls on us to separate fact from fiction.

Fox News is White House fed. George Bush and his team literally has been repeatedly accused of just feeding them news stories many of which have been false. When you have a news station like Fox that brings up the idea that Barack Obama could be a terrorist repeatedly just because he spent more than a year in a foreign country, that is a joke and an extremely disrespectful act. It is Rupert Murdoch's corporate puppet, and is slowly trying to influence and change our minds about key issues that deserve to be non-biased. I understand the opinion that all news sources are bias, but why not go to Google News, BBC, NY Times, CNN, FOX NEWS, ABC, CBS, liberal sites, conservative sites, and then compile all the information, search in your heart and brain to construct an opinion. Only then can you really have a constructive opinion, other wise it's all just political corporate garbage whether it be too-liberal or t00- conservative
