Three months ago an attempt to pass a bill regarding immigration failed. For the most part, the Democratic side of Congress wanted to give citizenship to present illegal immigrants, while most Republicans wanted to put restrictions on the illegal immigrants. After the bill failed, and the whole issue died fairly quickly. This was, of course, due to the failure and so the news and politicians moved on to other issues. Now, the topic is being brought back up and I read that an amendment could be introduced as early as this week. Again, Democrats want to give legal status to the immigrants, while Republicans want a short-term worker program. This renewed activity regarding immigration is a guarantied controversial subject.
As Sen. Jeff Sessions says, "We may be heading for another immigration battle."
I believe that this entire issue will have to be settled in a way that meets the desires of both political parties. I believe that the answer to Illegal immigration is not to allow all of them to become citizens. I know this country needs them, but again, conditional citizenship is not the answer. Citizenship is based on whether you were born in the

Hey Austin, I am more on the republican side, I do not believe that illegal immigrants should be granted citizenship. They cross into this country against the law, giving them citizenship would just encourage it, there are many who have to wait years to become citizens, it is not fair to them. I think that the employers of illegal immigrants should be fined a large amount, hopefully discouraging them from getting hired. I personally would paid more for products if it ensures the protection of the middle class.
Hey Austin!
I know you have ill will against the immigrants and dora the explorer, but i think you are being a little harsh. Maybe so many immigrants are coming into this country illegally because the legal process is not very efficent. Now, im not saying that this is a valid excuse, but it really does point out an issue that needs to be addressed. I believe that a work program should be instated because it is way too expensive to send all the immigrants back. In fact, in Elisa Wing's first blog entry she did an article that said it would cost $94 BILLION dollars to get rid of illegal immigrants...do you think its really worth it?
Austin
Your knowledge humbles me.
But really, you are right immigration is not a easy fix. You cant just give millions of illegal immigrants citezenship. Bad idea. What should happen is more opportunities for people to become citezens or even enter the country. For mexico there is like a one and a million chance that someone would get a green card. The wait is also to lengthy. But, I think the best thing for America was to have a program that would do these things and slowly immplement them.
The General,
It's definitely clear that something needs to be done about immigration. As it stands, people will submit their paperwork to become citizens and not get any response for years. I personally believe that some sort of one time mass naturalization process is necessary. Obviously you wouldn't just say, 'Hey now you are a citizen!' but rather make them go through the same testing process that everybody does now. After these people are citizens, some sort of tighter immigration control would need to be instituted. Either way, fruit prices go up. Either companies lose their employees and need to hire Americans for non-abusive pay or the employees become Americans and then they must pay them real money.
I also don't really see why letting these people become citizens will pose a greater threat. Oh no, those say 200 terrorists that posed as Mexicans (which by the way would totally not even happen) are now citizens! What are they gonna do, vote for a third party on purpose in our elections? Pump money into our social security? Any sort of harmful action that they would have done as a tourist they could just as easily do as a citizen. They really aren't gaining access to anything that much more threatening by becoming a citizen.
As many others have said i think the problem lies in the legal immigration process. I feel that with a more efficient and fair system in place immigration wouldn't be a "battle" just a process. I also believe that people who are illegally in this country do not deserve to be citizens. I feel it is unfair and selfish of them to come to this country illegally. While some may say that this is a harsh stance, i do not think so, if people believe that people from Mexico are doing nothing wrong by illegally coming to this country because the condition in Mexico is bad i think that would be a stupid stance, there are people all over the world with situations worse than those of the people of mexico, does that mean we should fly them all in and say our home is your home? no i dont think many people would agree with that. I say here in the US we have our own problems, you dont deserve to come here just because where you were born sucks.
Good points Austin, the whole idea of immigration is a very touchy subject which there is truly no simple solution. If somebody says, "let them all in and give them citizenship" then immedietly the argument of overcrowding and not enough jobs is brought into questioning. If somebody says to keep them out, they will be called ignorant or racist. It's really a lose-lose situation and I for one would like to see a politician with a very solid, well-rounded plan on immigration. Maybe we can let them in and use some of the vast empty areas of the US? After all it is pretty big and no one is currently occupying it...
