Post 9:
I recently read an article in the Los Angeles times and the author of the editorial claimed that abortion was not a religious issue. The article discussed the position that using religion as defense against abortion is not a legitimate argument. It points out that that people use the argument that abortion is not legitimate because those people believe that it is murder. This article uses the argument that it cannot be murder because the child is not developed and because it is the mother that makes the decision to stop the development of the baby. The writer also points out that abortion is not a religious issue because the Catholic Church has not treated abortion as murder in the past centuries.
One reason that I chose to write about this article was because I attend a Catholic school and I have always been told that abortion is murder. I also found this article interesting because the title was the exact opposite of what I had been taught in the past. I learned from this article a few things. One thing that I learned was that only 10 percent of evangelicals allow for abortion in case of rape. The topic applies to me because, because I go to a Catholic school and as I mentioned, abortion is often a topic that is discussed. It is really interesting to find an editorial which takes a completely different view than what I am used to because I really have never heard the argument that abortion is not a relgious issue. I have heard people debating using different arguments, but not simply say that the issue is "this way" because your whole defense makes no sense.
So I really just want to know what you all think of the position that abortion is by no means a religious issue. Abortion is one of those topics with tons of controversie and those who do claim that abortion is murder often take a religious defense. So, the author is basically saying that all those arguments are false simply because it is not a religious issue.

It seems that you share similar thoughts with me on issues like these, Austin. It is quite ironic, actually. I am glad that you think of it like I do. Perhaps we can have a longer discussion about this tomorrow in person, where it is easier to exchange ideas.
Hey! So I just got home from church this morning, and guess what my pastor talked about in his sermon?? Yup. He talked about abortion. So first off, that should just say something right there that abortion definitely is a religious issue. But to continue on with what he said, he talked about this survey that was taken among Christian teens who are actively involved in their churches. Ninety-nine percent of them believe that rape in unaccpetable except for if the mother's life in in danger, or if the child was conceived during a rape or incest. I thought that that was a pretty interesting statistic, especially because of how high that percentage was. So yes, I think that abortion definitely is a religious issue, and not only just for Catholics like you talked about, but for lots of other denominations as well.
Hi austin,
Im sorry i didnt know who colbert was!
Anywhos, abortion. Everyone has different opinions on abortion and the government technically cannot FORCE anyone to do anything. Even if abortion was banned, people would do it under the radar (or whatever that saying is). A victim of rape or a 14 year old girl from Maine would not want a child. It is too much responsibility. I say pro-choice. It sucks that people are stupid enough to not use condoms, but sex is a human function and people won't stop just because the Church says not to.
Well, to fundamentalists of course they will say it is a religious issue, but to those who are not strong in faith may say it is not one. It is impossible to say, it is an opinion, those who are strong in their belief will fight it while others will allow certain ways out like it can be allowed in the first trimester, if the woman is in danger, rape, etc.
I believe that abortion is both a religious and secular issue. Religious people either support or do not support it, and often use their religion to defend their opinion. However, nonreligious people also use their beliefs to justify a position on the issue as well. Abortion is an issue affecting everyone. I personally would not have an abortion, but I don't feel that it is ok to take that right away from people, especially if the mother's life is at risk or if she has been raped.
Oops. I just reread my comment.. and I completely stated that statistic wrong. It is supposed to say that 99% of all Christian teens believe that ABORTION is unacceptable, and not rape. (Of course I'm sure the statistic would be the same for rape as well, if not 100%). I dunno why I typed that out wrong the first time. My sincere apologies.
I feel that abortion is both a religious and secular issue as well. I understand that America is a Christian country and the majority of Christians find abortion to be completely against God. I would not have an abortion, but I feel that it should be available to whoever wishes to get one. If a 13 year old girl was raped, why should she keep the baby if she was not planning on having the child and if she would not raise the child appropriately. Abortion should be offered to whoever wants it, even if it is against the Christian religion.
